The Marion-Franklin Opportunity Center, in cooperation with Columbus City Schools, is providing a free Secretary training course to help you improve your administrative skills.  Participants will receive the training necessary to pass the civil service test and be eligible for Columbus City School district positions.

Class begins September 10

Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am  – 1:00 pm at the Marion-Franklin Opportunity Center, 2740 Lockbourne Road.  This 5-week class is designed to:

  • Improve typing skills to at least 4o wpm
  • Review skills needed to pass the “general clerical” civil service exam
  • Learn specific occupational skills required for the Secretary position
  • Develop skills in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Apply English skills in secretarial context; alphabetization, spelling, punctuation and proper sentence structure
  • Apply basic math skills in secretarial context; accurately compare one set of data to another for accuracy, compute sums, percent and averages

Qualify for substitute and part-time jobs

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be entered into a pool of qualified applicants to fill various substitute and part-time positions in the district.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Applicants must be available to work at various locations on a part-time basis
  • A final typing speed of at least 40 wpm is neccessary to successfully complete the program
